With a circumference of nearly half a mile, Avebury is not only the world’s largest stone circle but the heart of an extraordinary complex of rings, avenues, and other arrangements of stones, colossal earthworks, and a huge artificial hill. Where better to explore the megalithic secrets of the British Isles? Further to my books, Wisdomkeepers of Stonehenge and The Mystery of Doggerland, I reveal how those who built such monuments around 4500 years ago were a united culture rather than a collection of scattered communities and how they originated with a forgotten civilization to the north of Scotland. We examine evidence concerning what may have been the true purpose of these mysterious creations, such as ancient pottery containing medicines not rediscovered until modern times, stellar alignments used to calculate the precise times necessary for planting and harvesting medicinal plants, and ancient texts recording the remarkable abilities of those who used these sites.
Join us for this journey of discovery as we examine such mysteries as the purpose of the gigantic ditch and embankment seemingly built to contain something within, why a massive artificial hill was erected with no burials or chambers inside, and why the complex was so big that it could have contained the entire population of central-southern England at the time. Discover who the Megalithic people were, what they built, and why they might have created such an extraordinary place.
